Partners to Support International Export Training Statewide

Sacramento, CA – The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) today announced the creation of the California Export Training Network, a multi-organizational partnership focused on better preparing California’s small- to medium-sized businesses enter and expand into international markets. Trainings will include market assessments, transportation logistics, financing and methods of payment, and identifying new buyers.

“California is the world leader in innovation and leads the nation in startups. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and when a small business thrives, California thrives,” said Kaina Pereira, Deputy Director for Business Investment Services. “Trade promotion programs give our California businesses the job skills and training needed to compete for and maintain global market share.”

Exports are an essential part of California’s vibrant and diverse economy. In 2019, California businesses exported $173 billion in goods to 229 countries. Hundreds of thousands of California jobs are supported by exports – quality jobs that pay above the national average. There are more than 70,000 exporters in California, the vast majority of which are small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“This network creates a business service delivery system that leverages federal, state, and regional funding and expertise for the benefit of California businesses,” said Diana Dominguez, Special Advisor for International Affairs and Trade. “We welcome our partners, who are joining the California Export Training Network.”

Governor’s Chief Economic and Business Advisor Releases Statement on December Employment Numbers

Sacramento, CA – Following the California Employment Development Department’s (EDD) release of the state’s employment data from December, the Governor’s Chief Economic and Business Advisor and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, Lenny Mendonca issued the following statement:

“California’s job growth continued to outpace the nation, for a historic 118 months in December. Over this past year alone, we added 310,300 nonfarm payroll jobs, an increase of 1.8 percent – stronger than the nation’s 1.4 percent gain over the same time. As this expansion continues, it’s important that we remain fiscally disciplined, which Governor Newsom made a cornerstone in his proposed state budget. It’s also important that we recognize that this growth isn’t shared by everyone. Ensuring the jobs we have now and in the future are quality jobs, which in turn support economic mobility, is how we build an economy that works for all Californians.”

Sacramento, CA – Following the California Employment Development Department’s (EDD) release of the state’s employment data from November, the Governor’s Chief Economic and Business Advisor and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, Lenny Mendonca issued the following statement:

“One hundred seventeen months now of job expansion and the continuation of a historic low unemployment rate shows that the high-road of California capitalism continues to be the path to success. As we look ahead to 2020, we resolve to ensure our economy is built on inclusive, sustainable growth and that the jobs in this state are quality jobs that support economic mobility. Because we understand there is no trade-off between inclusion and growth and there are few greater legacies for us to leave our children than an economy that works for all.”

Go-Biz Launches #ShopLocalCA Campaign Celebrating California’s Small Businesses

Sacramento, CA – Today, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) launched a video sharing the “#ShopLocalCA” social media campaign, which celebrates the diversity of California’s small businesses this holiday season.

The #ShopLocalCA campaign amplifies the stories of California’s vital small businesses, which are the backbone of our state’s economy. The social media campaign gives Californians an inside look into dozens of small businesses and invites them to participate in this celebration by sharing their favorite small businesses through the hashtag #ShopLocalCA on all social media platforms.

“It’s so important to give back to your community, and shopping locally directly benefits you and your neighbors. Two-thirds of every dollar you spend at a small business goes back into that local economy, helping your community thrive, the individuals who live there prosper, in turn creating lasting effects on the total health of the community,” said Isabel Guzman, Go-Biz Director of the Office of the Small Business Advocate. “Main streets really define our neighborhoods and make us feel at home. Our small businesses are the fabric of our lives in many ways and it is such a powerful statement to embrace the businesses that are there to meet a community’s needs locally.”

The campaign was officially launched on GO-Biz’s social media platforms during the Thanksgiving holiday and will continue through the holiday season.

California, the fifth largest economy in the world, has 4 million small businesses operating in the state – 52 percent of which are minority-owned. The 69,387 small firms that exported goods from California generated 43 percent of the state’s $151.1 billion in total exports. California leads the nation in new businesses started every year. To help California’s small businesses succeed in the marketplace, GO-Biz provides information and assistance including incentives and financing, consulting and training offerings, and emergency preparedness.

Governor’s Chief Economic and Business Advisor Releases Statement on October Employment Numbers

Sacramento, CA – Following the California Employment Development Department’s (EDD) release of the state’s employment data from October, the Governor’s Chief Economic and Business Advisor and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, Lenny Mendonca issued the following statement:

“It is encouraging to see California’s unemployment rate dip to a new record low of 3.9 percent and another strong month of job gains. California’s innovation economy continues to create jobs over a record long 116 months. But we also need to ensure that those jobs are high-quality jobs and have a pathway that supports economic mobility. That is why Governor Newsom created the Future of Work Commission. The Commission, which met for a third time yesterday at UC Riverside, convenes employers, workers, educational institutions, technology innovators, and nonprofits across the public and private sectors in local- and state-level so that we can look at up-skilling workers and how to upgrade jobs. Innovation and quality jobs go hand in hand.”
