Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development Releases EV Charging Station Permitting Guide

Jul 16, 2019 | Press Release

Sacramento, CA – Today, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) released its Electric Vehicle Charging Station Permitting Guidebook, a document designed to help businesses and communities work together to accelerate the expansion of California’s charging station network.

“Access to charging stations is fundamental to building a zero-emission vehicle system for all drivers,” said the Governor’s Chief Economic and Business Advisor and Director of GO-Biz Lenny Mendonca. “Success starts at the local level, and our team is eager to continue working with local stakeholders to accelerate market development.”

As a companion to the guidebook, GO-Biz released an Electric Vehicle Charging Station Permit Streamlining Map to track progress towards streamlining permitting processes throughout the state. The map is designed to shine a light on communities which have implemented best practices and help other communities come up to speed.

“We’re working hard to put more zero-emission vehicles on our streets and highways,” said California Air Resources Board Chair Mary D. Nichols. “But even when cities support electrification, their permitting process slows down the rollout of charging and the growth of the EV market. This guidebook will help local governments, communities, and stakeholders to rapidly deploy more charging and hydrogen stations throughout the state — and help California meet its climate and air quality goals.”

“The Energy Commission funds charging station projects throughout California and permitting is consistently reported as one of the biggest challenges,” said California Energy Commissioner Patty Monahan. “We are excited to continue partnering with GO-Biz as we work to streamline charging station development across the state.”

California’s target is to deploy 250,000 shared chargers, including 10,000 fast chargers and 200 hydrogen stations by 2025. Today, we have approximately 40,000 public and private shared chargers, including over 3,000 fast chargers, and 40 hydrogen stations.
